MusicScreen- Lohengrin (Cert TBC)

The Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, stages Lohengrin, Richard Wagner’s epic story set in mediaeval Brabant that explores the conflict between Christian faith and Germanic paganism. The three-act opera was first performed at the Deutsches Nationaltheater in Weimar on 28 August 1850, the last of his major works to premiere before his political exile.

Lohengrin was already established as a legendary character before Wagner came to tell his story in opera. A Knight drawn from the German Arthurian legends, Lohengrin is a Knight of the Holy Grail and the son of the Grail King Parzival, another fabled figure Wagner wrote music for. In the legend, Lohengrin is sent to defend the honour of the Duchess of Brabant. He can protect her but there is a condition: she must never ask him his name nor question anything about his identity. The idea of this type of Christian, knightly intervention, and the forbidden nature of knowing anything about it appealed to the German composer and he made it the focal point of his operatic interpretation of the tale.

This production of Lohengrin features all of the iconic elements that make this opera so distinctive, from the Bridal Chorus in Act Three to the mythical arrival of the Knight in Act One.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (18)

Expanding upon the world created by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland in 28 Years Later – but turning that world on its head – Nia DaCosta directs 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. In a continuation of the epic story, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself in a shocking new relationship – with consequences that could change the world as they know it – and Spike’s (Alfie Williams) encounter with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) becomes a nightmare he can’t escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival – the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.

Escapes: Giant (15)

Free tickets are now available for our latest Escapes film Giant

Based on the remarkable true story of legendary British-Yemeni boxing champion Prince Naseem “Naz” Hamed and his relationship with Irish boxing trainer Brendan Ingle, Giant charts Naz’s inspiring rags-to-riches underdog tale from his humble beginnings in Sheffield to becoming champion of the world. With his unorthodox style, cocky persona and sheer dominance of the sport, Naseem faced down the abhorrent racism and islamophobia that swept Britain in the 80’s and 90’s, to become a global sporting icon, both inside and outside of the ring. The film explores the unlikely and tender relationship between Naz and his trainer Ingle – a steel industry worker who ran a humble boxing gym in a church hall in the North of England; and the instrumental role that Ingle played on Naz’s road to success.

Supported by British Film Institute awarding National Lottery funding.

Jazz Steps: Jon Lloyd Quartet

Jon Lloyd speaks warmly about this line-up… “…my long-standing friend and musical collaborator, pianist John Law, was the only real choice for expressing the delicate harmonic fabric of this music. His combination of sensitivity, immense depth of musical knowledge and virtuosic technique makes him the perfect fit. Next, I wanted a drummer with the understated strength and imagination which this music requires. To find that in the young Alex Goodyear was a true miracle! On bass I needed someone with the ability to be both abstract and groovy, with super accurate pitch and a deep propulsive feel without necessarily having to swing! Like Alex, Nick Pini was an amazingly lucky find.”

Line-up: Jon Law – Saxophone, John Law – Piano, Nick Pinni – Bass, Alex Goodyear – Drums

This wonderful gig features music from the band’s brand new album Ballads and Bossas.
