Nottingham Organ Society… Simon Fox

Born 29th January 1988 in Nottingham, Simon began playing on a Yamaha keyboard aged 11 inspired by a recording of the great Reginald Dixon being played in his Grandad’s living room. He used up money in his savings account to upgrade his keyboard when he was 13 and had lessons to hone his technique. It was clear that his playing style was suited to an organ and he purchased a Yamaha Electone HS8 just a few years later.
Simon played to his first audience aged just 15 whilst still at school and soon began providing holiday cover in pubs and clubs, playing to accompany singers. He continues to do this to this day!

Simon developed his technique further to be able to play for dancing, having played for local functions, fundraisers and events.
Over the years, Simon has built his collection of instruments to include a Yamaha SX970 keyboard, Technics GA1, Technics GA3 and a Technics EA5. All of which he transports to various events. He uses a Roland Fantom XR sound expander to reproduce the wonderful sounds of the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool.

Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat (12A)

In 1960, sixteen newly independent African countries enter the United Nations. Congo becomes the arena in which the battle over the UN is fought. As Nikita Khrushchev pounds his shoe at the UN-top in reaction to the neo-colonial grab of the resources of newly independent Congo, UN delegates from African Countries are blackmailed. In an incredulous twist Patrice Lumumba’s assassination unites the Afro-Asian block, demanding the UN General Assembly to vote for immediate worldwide decolonisation. In this highly explosive context, the United States government dispatches Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Nina Simone as Jazz Ambassadors around the world – as a diversion from CIA-backed coups.

“Superb study of how jazz got caught between the cold war and the CIA” ★★★★★ Observer

“Johan Grimonprez’s fascinating documentary suggests that the US used jazz legend Louis Armstrong in a ‘cool war’ offensive to assassinate Patrice Lumumba” ★★★★ Guardian
