MANNdatory Viewing: Miami Vice (15)

Michael Mann’s Miami Vice didn’t quite receive the reception it deserved on release. A reasonable box office return but middling reviews ensured that the film disappeared almost as quickly as it had arrived, with Mann seemingly unable to capitalise on the success of the TV show he had produced in the late 1980s.

Yet if any film from the mid 2000s were ripe for reappraisal then Miami Vice fits the bill. When popular Twitter user Brandon Streussnig jokingly tweeted last month that he would be showing his girlfriend his favourite film in what could be a ‘make-or-break’ move, the joke managed to cause a wild discourse that saw Michael Mann fans rushing to defend him and screenings popping up all over the US.

So in what may (or may not) become a season, we’ve decided to revisit the films of Michael Mann. Starting with 2006’s Miami Vice!

Jazz Steps: Clark Tracey Sextet- Double Bill

A seasonal treat to hear two renowned Jazz Suites composed by Stan Tracey, inspired by the poetic imagery of Dylan Thomas’ works: A Child’s Christmas in Wales and Under Milk Wood.

Next year marks the 60th anniversary of Stan’s composition Under Milk Wood . Originally released as a mono LP in 1965 (and re-released several times since), it is rated a ’canonical classic of British jazz’. His grandson Ben Tracey recollects that Stan “began writing the music for his masterpiece on the night bus home to Streatham from his job as the house pianist at Ronnie Scott’s”.

The peerless ballad Starless and Bible Black and other evocative tunes well-integrated with lyrical passages from Dylan’s work, transport the listener to the fictional small Welsh fishing town of Llareggub – spell that backwards! Written for radio, Under Milk Wood has a host of eccentric characters and follows their daily activities, loving them, despite their flaws.

Line-up: Clark Tracey drums, TBA piano, Simon Allen saxes, Andrew Cleyndert bass and narration from both Ben Tracey and Sharon White.

Nottingham Organ Society… Claire Greig

Claire was born and raised in Derby where I still live today. I didn’t show any interest in music until at the age the age of five, my parents took me to Pontins “Middleton Towers” on holiday. This coincided with the A.O.E National Organ Festival week. Most of my time is spent teaching music around Derbyshire, offering piano, keyboard, organ, flute and music theory lessons. Locally in Derby face to face, or online offered for those outside of Derbyshire. Learn for fun, or work towards exam grades, all levels catered for.
Concerts now being performed on the amazing Wersi OAX-1 duo.
