Nottingham Organ Society- Chris & Joanne Powell

About Chris Powell

Chris Powell has firmly established himself as one of the UK’s premier ‘entertainment organists’ as well as a truly international ambassador in the field of electronic and theatre organ music. Born in Manchester in 1971, he emigrated to New Zealand with his parents when just 2 years old. Returning to England at the age of 5, his education and formative years while growing up in Lancashire saw him pursue his love of music with piano and organ studies culminating in a string of engagements for both local concerts and dances from the age of 14 onwards. By the time he was 18, he had successfully auditioned to join the team of organists playing for dancing at the Tower Ballroom Blackpool and began to be recognised for his musical talents leading to a succession of invitations to perform at electronic and pipe organ venues.

About Joanne Powell

Joanne Powell was ten years of age when she started to play the organ. Mum and Dad were organ fans and bought an old Galanti for the vast sum of £175. That was where it all began.
Mum played the chapel organ and Dad was in a brass band, but the ultimate had been achieved with the purchase of the Galanti.
Lessons by a church organist on a piano were the order of the day until an organ shop was opened in her home-town of Gainsborough. She then transferred to lessons at the shop, given by an ex theatre organist. Soon after a new organ was acquired and after a couple of years, she joined a dance band, playing of course keyboards.

From acclaimed British filmmaker, Carol Morley, this dark and funny exploration of the growing friendship between two women as they hit the road in an electric car looking for reconciliation, is filled with adventure, humour and compassion.

The Miracle Club (12A)

Set in 1967, The Miracle Club is a heart-warming film that follows the story of three generations of close friends, Lily (Maggie Smith), Eileen (Kathy Bates), and Dolly (Agnes O’Casey) of Ballygar, a hard-knocks community in Dublin, who have one tantalizing dream: to win a pilgrimage to the sacred French town of Lourdes, that place of miracles that draws millions of visitors each year. When the chance to win presents itself, the women seize it.

However, just before their trip, their old friend Chrissie (Laura Linney) arrives in Ballygar for her Mother’s funeral, dampening their good mood and well-laid plans. The women secure tickets and set out on the journey that they hope will change their lives, with Chrissie joining in place of her mother. The glamor and sophistication of Chrissie, who has just returned from a nearly 40-year exile in the United States, are not her only difficult traits. Old wounds are reopened along the way, forcing the women to confront their pasts even as they travel in search of a miracle. Deep wounds from the past can only be healed by the curative power of love and friendship.

Jazz in the Bar with Mandy Tatton

Jazz vocalist Mandy Tatton delivers beautiful swinging jazz steeped in the influences of Blossom Dearie and Diana Krall, as well as delicious Samba and Bossa Nova songs from Brazil.

She has studied music and jazz harmony, and worked with famed British jazz vocalist Lee Gibson. Here she will be singing a personal selection of classic jazz tunes and well known standards. On her previous appearances Mandy gave us a great night of jazz appreciated by all.

The superb Bob Hudson trio provide swinging yet sensitive accompaniment and will perform some of their own pieces. Should be a night of toe tapping finger snapping jazz!
