Bonington Jazz Company with Emily Masser (In the Bar!)

Emily Masser is a young jazz singer and saxophonist, originally from Wigan. She studied at London’s Guildhall School of Music and before that at Manchester’s famous Chetham’s School of Music. She gained attention and encouragement from jazz luminaries Lianne Carroll and Claire Martin – high praise indeed. Her acclaimed first album, “Introducing Emily Masser”  showcased her arranging skills, taking classic jazz standards such as “So Near So Far” and “The Man I Love” and making them sound newly minted and excitingly different. She followed this up with an album “Songs With My Father” where she collaborated with her father, the highly respected saxophonist Dean Masser.  This highly personal album featured tributes to her late mother, with critics noting the strong empathy between father and daughter throughout the album.  Critics also noted her ability to navigate complex bebop melodies and to deliver engaging scat solos.

“Young vocalist Emily Masser is one of the most original and distinctive musicians to emerge on the current British scene.” – Jazzwise.

Jazz Steps: John Law’s Re-Creations

Jazz’s ‘sound of surprise’ as familiar tunes from many genres get a fresh makeover!

In his Re-Creations quartet, John Law’s band creatively surprise and delight playing arrangements of well-known tunes taken from different genres – jazz, pop, indie, rock, folk – turning them into modern day jazz standards.

Knowing the familiar tunes, audiences feel part of the creative process and the play and interplay of the musicians. No matter how intricate the arrangements become and how inventive the improvisation, you tune-in to savour the underpinning melody and the tune’s pulse and propulsion.

As well as notably jazz tunes from the likes of Monk, Miles Davis and Gershwin, the quartet’s evolving repertoire includes pop/rock/indie tunes from such artists as Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Radiohead. Not forgetting classical pieces too, such as Satie’s Gymnopédie and Debussy’s Claire De Lune.

Line-up: John Law – piano, Sam Crockatt – tenor & soprano saxes, Henrik Jensen – bass and Alex Goodyear – drums
